Coming Events:

This year, Oakmont High School offers 36 sections of 16 different Advanced Placement and Honors courses. Our Advanced Placement courses are Spanish 4, French 4, Calculus, Statistics, European History, US History, Economics & Government, Studio Art, Art History, English Literature, and English Language. Oakmont also offers Honors courses in English 10, English 11, Pre-Calculus, Chemistry, and Physics.

Our GATE funds are being used to purchase Advanced Placement workbooks, study aids, and lab kits for math, science, English, and History AP and Honors courses. GATE funds will also provide entrance fees for our Academic Decathlon team and our HOSA representatives. In addition, funds are being used to send teachers to conferences and Advanced Placement workshops.

The Small Business Enterprise/MCAT course is in its sixth year at Oakmont. This is a one-term course that can be taken multiple times in a student's career. It helps prepare students who are interested in starting their own business and designing products for a customer. The MCAT course allows students to run a school-based, student-run desktop publishing, media creation, and mass production business. Students will produce products such as: certificates, plaques, stationery, business cards, programs, resumes, posters, bound material, laminated items, and meet staff's copying needs. In addition, teachers and community experts will be brought in to share their expertise with the students.

Another program offered on campus is AVID. AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) prepares under-performing students with GPA's between 2.0 and 3.5, and with strong standardized test scores, for four-year college/university entry. In fact, over 90% of AVID graduates enroll in college and of these, 89% persist in college. AVID strongly encourages students to enroll in AP and Honors courses, and then supports these students by teaching the advanced study and writing skills necessary to succeed. College students tutor AVID students twice a week in the AVID classroom. For more information, please contact Debra Love, dlove@rjuhsd.us, or at 782-3781 ext. 2214.

Oakmont has a GATE parent advisory committee. If you are interested in participating in this group, please contact me.
